Dr. Amy Wechsler
One of only a small handful of physicians in the country board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry, Dr. Amy Wechsler adds another dimension to dermatology. Using the latest technologies and techniques, she treats a wide range of dermatologic conditions – beginning with a careful evaluation of the patient’s psychological stressors and skin care concerns.
Her journey toward clinical dermatology began with an exemplary academic career at Duke University, where she graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with a B.S. in Psychology. She completed her residency in psychiatry as well as a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at The Payne Whitney Clinic – New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
While at The Payne Whitney Clinic, Dr. Wechsler often observed the effects of psychological factors on patients’ outward appearance and dermatologic health. Realizing that this powerful connection was largely unaddressed, she completed a residency in dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Her training reinforced her conviction that treating skin without addressing psychological factors brings limited success, and she began to develop a breakthrough approach drawing on both medical disciplines.
In 2008, Dr. Wechsler published a book about her “stress aging” theory called The Mind-Beauty Connection. In it she details her experiences, demystifies complicated dermatologic topics, and offers advice on achieving a healthy lifestyle and beautiful skin.
As an expert on skin health, Dr. Wechsler serves as an advisor for Chanel Skin Care. In a series of informative videos for Chanel, she discusses topics such as the mind-beauty connection, UVA and UVB sun damage, skin care mistakes and dermatology treatments.
Dr. Wechsler’s work has also earned her hospital appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor in Dermatology, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is also a certified Allergan Injection Trainer and KOL Speaker, qualified to teach physicians and other medical professionals in the use of products such as Botox and Jeuveau, Juvederm and Voluma. Her professional affiliations include the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the American Psychiatric Association, the Independent Doctors of New York, and The Skin Cancer Foundation.
A sought-after media consultant, she has been featured on The Today Show, Dr. Oz Show and Tyra Banks Show, and extensively in print, including Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, Elle, Marie Claire, Self, O Magazine, Lucky, W Magazine, The New York Times, Health, Allure, InStyle, Shape, Prevention, GQ, Women’s Wear Daily, Redbook, Better Homes & Gardens, People and StyleWatch.
